2009 Zoos and Aquariums Committing to Conservation
CALL FOR PAPERS CALL FOR PAPERS
Those who have attended past conferences can attest to the incredible enthusiasm and opportunities for conservation partnerships that such events have produced, and ZACC 2009 will be no exception. Two years ago we had close to 250 registrants representing more than two dozen countries and we expect that the upcoming event will set new records.
Each presentation will be 20 minutes in length, with approximately five minutes allotted for questions and answers afterwards. In general, we are looking for presentations that highlight new initiatives and establish opportunities for collaborations between zoos and aquariums, field biologists, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. Our basic premise is that each and every one of us has a role to play in the effort to safeguard Earth's threatened biological diversity.
In particular, we are seeking presentations that fall within the following categories:
-
Amphibian conservation programs
-
Critically endangered species
-
Wildlife reintroductions and translocations
-
Building local capacity for conservation
-
Developing future conservation heroes
-
Innovative fundraising techniques
-
Showcasing and promoting conservation initiatives
If you are interested in submitting a presentation for consideration, please send it to:
conservation@houstonzoo.org. Be sure to include a brief biological sketch in addition to your abstract and to indicate whether you anticipate requiring financial support in order to attend the conference, should your presentation be accepted.
Conference Program
The 2009 ZACC conference planning is underway including program and schedule. Presentations will highlight both ongoing projects and new initiatives that offer opportunities for institutional, corporate and foundation support. There will be a major focus on field-based initiatives that have already established links to zoos and aquariums, as well as promising candidates for such partnerships. In addition, the program will feature presentations related to the organization, management, and support of zoo-based and aquarium-based conservation programs.
Houston, Texas, the nation’s fourth largest city and a leader in business, entertainment and the arts, will be the host city for the next Zoos and Aquariums Committing to Conservation (ZACC) Conference, scheduled for January 23-26, 2009. The Houston Zoo, founded in 1922 and one of the city’s major recreational destinations, is proud to be the host institution for this important event. The 55-acre zoo is home to more than 4,500 animals representing more than 800 species and receives approximately 1.6 million guests each year.
