Laura Ingalls Wilder

Laura Ingalls Wilder: Voice of the Prairie at the Houston Zoo!

Come to the Houston Zoo Saturdays, January 23 and 30 and Sundays, January 24, and 31 to see characters from Kathryn Shultz Miller’s delightful play Laura Ingalls Wilder: Voice of the Prairie.

The A.D. Players will perform a play based on
the remarkable life of the title character captured from her early days in the Big Woods of Wisconsin through her youth and marriage in South Dakota to her adult years in southern Missouri. With quick, sure brush strokes Miller evokes both the vivid sensory world and the loving family circle that surrounds Laura. As we watch a little girl grow, become a woman, a mother and an award-winning author, Miller traces a parallel journey through a period of equally astonishing growth and change in the country.

See the entire play at the A.D. Players Theatre from February 3 through March 20, 2010. Visit www.adplayers.org for show times and ticket information.

Did you know?

Historically, much of Houston and parts of Hermann Park were covered by a sprawling, vibrant grassland known as the Coastal Prairie. This landscape was dominated by tall grasses towering up to 8 feet above the ground in fall. As development proceeded, fires were halted, and trees were grown. The prairie became increasingly rare and now is listed as a critically endangered ecosystem with few native prairies
left in Harris County and no remaining sites left in Hermann Park.

You can get involved!

Let's Get Growing...Help grow native prairie plants at home and participate in a phase of Project Blazingstar on April 17, 2010! Project  Blazingstar is a multiyear effort to restore three small, but highly visible native prairie areas in Hermann Park. The Hermann Park Conservancy (HPC), Coastal Prairie Partnership (CPP), and Texas Master Naturalists have created a goal to replace non-native, weedy grasses with a diverse assortment of native grasses and wildflowers to create a habitat for birds, butterflies, rabbits, and other park wildlife. The success of this effort will rely on volunteers like you!
