METRORAIL

Houston metroThe arrival of METRORail brings a new era of transportation to Houston. It's a fast, convenient and safe way to travel between Downtown, Midtown, the Museum District, the Texas Medical Center, Reliant Park and the South Fannin Park & Ride lot. With frequent service and the capacity to carry up to 400 passengers per trip, METRORail will help cut through congestion in these heavily traveled areas. Click here for a METRORail Map and here for a METRORail Schedule through Hermann Park.

Save $1 on an adult admission when you ride METRO to the Houston Zoo (One offer per person). Present any current METRO bus or METRORail ticket at the admission booth to receive your discount.

Carpooling and riding the METRO bus or METRORail system are good alternatives to navigating a parking spot.

You can catch METRORail at the Fannin South Park & Ride lot, located at 1604 West Bellfort (between Knight and Fannin). Or you can park downtown and catch METRORail at any of the downtown rail stations.

Two METRORail stations serve the Zoo and Hermann Park:  Hermann Park/Rice U Station at Fannin and Sunset, or the Memorial Hermann Hospital/Houston Zoo Station on Fannin between North MacGregor and Ross Sterling. Check the printable map below to see suggested routes to the Zoo from your preferred rail stop.

For more information on the METRORail system, including a map, schedule and fares, visit www.ridemetro.org, or call METROLine at 713.635.4000.

Buy your tickets before you arrive.  Purchase discount Zoo tickets at any of the 33 Fiesta Mart stores across the Houston area.  Visit the courtesy booth of any Fiesta Mart in the Houston area to purchase an adult Zoo admission for $8 and a child Zoo admission for $4.

If you must drive…..

Driving directions from 59 or 45
Take 59 or 45 to Highway 288 South. Exit N. MacGregor and turn right onto N. MacGregor. The road will fork once, stay to the right. Take a right at the light onto Golf Course Drive. The Houston Zoo will be located on the left.

Driving directions from 610 South
Take 610 South to Highway 288 North. Exit N. MacGregor and turn left onto N. MacGregor. The road will fork once, stay to the right. Take a right at the light onto Golf Course Drive. The Houston Zoo will be located on the left.

Access to Golf Course Drive
Often, when the Park is near capacity, HPD will close access to Golf Course Drive at N. MacGregor. If you’re heading west on N. MacGregor, go straight through the intersection of N. MacGregor and Golf Course Drive. (If you’re approaching from the east, go past the MacGregor intersection, reverse direction and follow the “heading west” instructions.) Turn right onto Fannin. At the second light on Fannin, take a right onto Hermann Circle Drive. Continue on Hermann Circle Drive as it turns into Golf Course Drive. The Zoo will be on your right.

Parking

Parking in Hermann Park and the Zoo’s main lot on Golf Course Drive is limited, so consider arriving early.

Other parking options include using the Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza at 6400 Fannin. This facility does charge a parking fee.

Better yet, just take the convenient METRORail anywhere along its line from downtown to near the old AstroWorld location .

Houston Area traffic updates

Several construction projects in progress near the Zoo and Hermann Park may result in traffic delays.  Visit this page often for the latest information to make your trip to the Zoo more enjoyable.
Long-term current lane closures for construction are:
  • Kirby Drive north of Holcombe Boulevard
One lane of traffic in each direction is closed to continue the installation of two large box storm sewers.
  • Main Street as you approach N. MacGregor Ave.
Going toward the museum district, the curb lane is closed. Traffic in that lane must merge into the center lane and traffic is slow. Use San Jacinto as an alternate during rush hours.
  • N. MacGregor between Fannin and San Jacinto
The south-side curb lane is closed. If you are going from Main St. toward Hermann Park be prepared for delays and watch for construction workers and trucks.
  • Cambridge St. South of Holcombe to Old Spanish Trail
Expect delays due to construction for the installation of a large storm sewer.  One temporary lane is open in each direction.  The lanes are rough so drive slowly and be watchful for construction equipment and workers.
There are several reliable Web sites that post traffic information regularly.  Visit the links below for more information.

Note: None of the sites below are maintained or operated by the Houston Zoo.
Click here for information about traffic control and lane closures related to the MacGregor Drive Storm Sewer Relief Project.
